A slip stitch version of half double crochet is used to create the horizontal ribs. It should be worked rather loosely, otherwise it may be too difficult to insert the hook into when working the next row. If you tend to crochet tightly, you may need to use a bigger hook.

The headband is constructed from 2 rectangular pieces worked flat in a horizontal half double crochet slip stitch rib. They are then sewn together to create interlocking loops.
