Resembling the textured stripe and dot markings of these creatures from the deep, Urchin mixes two yarn weights to combine sharp matte stitch definition punctuated by a flourish of fuzzy softness.

Dimensions: 21”/54 cm circumference top,
30”/76 cm circumference bottom, 10”/26 cm deep

Gauge: 20 sts x 24 rows in Granite Relief stitch = 4”/10 cm, unblocked. Gauge is not crucial, but will affect the finished size of the work.

Techniques: Easy Short rows, eyelet stitches, grafting

Simple turned short rows are used twice each pattern repeat to create a funnel shaped cowl, wider at the bottom than at the top. The majority of Urchin is worked in Col 1. Col 2 is joined to work one Row 15 each pattern repeat, then cut.
During Finishing, the top half cowl stitches are joined by grafting them together, while the remaining bottom half stitches are bound off in Col 2 and left open to create a shoulder slit.
